The Detroit Pistons have agreed to send guard Marcus Sasser to the Dallas Mavericks, reuniting him with former college coach Dusty May. The deal, confirmed by league sources, gives the Mavericks a young, efficient shooter off the bench. Sasser, a first-round pick in 2023, spent three seasons in Detroit, where he showed flashes of scoring ability but struggled to find consistent minutes on a rebuilding team.
Last season, Sasser appeared in 38 games for the Pistons, averaging 5.2 points while shooting 41.5 percent from three-point range. His best stretch came in early February, when he scored 18 points in a win over the Sacramento Kings. However, with Detroit adding veteran guards in free agency, his role became less defined.
For Dallas, the move adds depth behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. May, who coached Sasser at the University of Houston, is familiar with his game and likely sees him as a reliable floor spacer. The Mavericks have prioritized shooting this offseason, and Sasser's ability to knock down catch-and-shoot threes fits their system. The Pistons, meanwhile, continue to stockpile future assets as they reshape their roster around Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey. Financial terms of the trade were not immediately disclosed.
