The pipeline from the University of Alabama to the Golden State Warriors is not a heavily traveled one, but a few notable Crimson Tide alumni have made the journey through the NBA Draft. The history of Alabama players selected by the franchise spans several decades, showcasing a variety of roles and eras in basketball.
The most recent connection is current Warriors guard, and former SEC Player of the Year, Kira Lewis Jr., who was drafted 13th overall in 2020 by the New Orleans Pelicans. While not directly drafted by Golden State, his acquisition continues the link. Going further back, the Warriors selected Derrick McKey with the 9th overall pick in the 1987 draft. McKey, a versatile forward, was immediately traded on draft night, a common practice that still associates him with the Warriors' draft call.
The most successful direct draft pick is undoubtedly Robert Horry. Chosen 11th overall by the Warriors in 1992, "Big Shot Rob" played his rookie season in Golden State before being traded. He would later achieve fame as a clutch performer, winning seven championships with three other teams. Earlier, in 1977, the then-San Francisco Warriors used a second-round pick on Reggie King, a powerful forward who became an All-Rookie selection and spent his first four professional seasons with the franchise.
This select group illustrates how draft rights can create lasting, if sometimes brief, connections between a collegiate powerhouse and one of the NBA's most iconic franchises.
