Inside Charles Hart Middle School, a group of young athletes is receiving a crucial piece of athletic gear: a properly fitted sports bra. They are among hundreds of girls across 38 District of Columbia public schools benefiting from a new initiative designed to remove barriers to sports participation.
The program, a partnership between the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the sports bra brand Shefit, addresses a often-overlooked hurdle. Organizers cite studies showing that a lack of access to appropriate athletic apparel is a significant factor causing girls to drop out of sports at higher rates than boys. By providing this essential equipment, the effort seeks to foster confidence, comfort, and inclusion for young female athletes.
"Something as simple as a sports bra can be the difference between a girl feeling empowered to join a team or sitting on the sidelines," said a DPR representative. The distribution events also include educational sessions on proper fit and the importance of physical activity, aiming to instill healthy habits. The overarching goal is to help close the persistent gender gap in youth athletics by ensuring all students have the foundational support they need to play and compete.
