Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick did not hold back when discussing center Deandre Ayton's lackluster effort in Game 3 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Following a 112-98 loss that put the Lakers in a 2-1 series hole, Redick pointed to a specific sequence where Ayton failed to attack the rim, settling for a fadeaway jumper instead of driving hard against a smaller defender.
"That's the kind of play that makes you wonder if he's fully locked in," Redick said during the postgame press conference. "We need him to be a force, not a spectator."
Ayton finished the game with just 8 points and 6 rebounds, a far cry from the dominant presence the Lakers expected when they acquired him. The 7-footer appeared hesitant on multiple possessions, often passing out of post-ups or pulling up for mid-range jumpers rather than imposing his will in the paint. One particularly frustrating moment came in the third quarter when Ayton had a clear mismatch against Thunder guard Josh Giddey but chose to kick the ball out to a covered shooter.
The passive performance has raised questions about Redick's faith in his starting center. When asked if Ayton's role might change for Game 4, Redick paused before answering. "We evaluate everything. Every player, every lineup. Right now, we need guys who want to punish the defense."
Ayton, for his part, acknowledged the criticism. "I have to be better. No excuses. I know what they need from me, and I didn't bring it tonight." The Lakers will need a more assertive Ayton if they hope to reclaim home-court advantage in the series.
