Maple Leafs Announce Major Player Absence Ahead of Avalanche Showdown

October 10, 2026 - 01:28

The Toronto Maple Leafs have confirmed that forward John Tavares will not play on Saturday when the team faces the Colorado Avalanche. Head coach Jim Hiller shared the news with reporters, explaining that Tavares returned to Toronto to be with his family as they welcome a new baby boy.

Tavares, a key part of Toronto's offense, leaves a noticeable gap in the lineup for what many consider the team's hardest matchup so far this season. The Avalanche bring speed and scoring depth that will test the Maple Leafs in every zone.

Without their captain on the ice, Toronto will need other forwards to step up and take on bigger roles. The coaching staff may shuffle lines to cover the minutes Tavares usually plays, especially on the power play and in faceoff situations.

The team has not given a timeline for his return, though the absence is expected to be short given the nature of the situation. Players and fans alike have sent congratulations to the Tavares family.

Saturday's game will show how well Toronto adjusts against one of the Western Conference's top teams.
