Mike McCarthy shares key update on Steelers rookie Max Iheanachor

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy offered a fresh update on rookie defensive lineman Max Iheanachor as the team gears up for its first preseason game this weekend. The first-round pick has been a focal point of training camp, and McCarthy's comments suggest the coaching staff is pleased with his early progress.

Speaking to reporters after Thursday's practice, McCarthy highlighted Iheanachor's quick adaptation to the pro level. "He's absorbing the playbook well and showing real burst in one-on-one drills," McCarthy said. "For a young guy, his pad level is surprisingly consistent, and he's asking the right questions in meetings. We're going to give him a solid chunk of snaps on Saturday to see how he handles live action."

The rookie out of Georgia Tech has been rotating with the second-team defense but has occasionally taken reps with the starters during situational work. McCarthy noted that Iheanachor's conditioning has improved since the start of camp, which was a concern after he missed a few early practices with a minor hamstring tweak. "He's past that now. He's moving well and finishing reps," McCarthy added.

The preseason opener will mark Iheanachor's first NFL game action, and the coaching staff wants to evaluate him specifically against run blocks and in pass-rush stunts. McCarthy emphasized that the team will not overextend him, but they plan to let him play through the second quarter. "We're not going to hold him back. He needs live reps to learn," McCarthy said.

Iheanachor, drafted 24th overall, is expected to compete for a starting spot on the interior line by Week 1. For now, the focus is on fundamentals and building trust with the veterans around him. McCarthy summed it up simply: "He's got the tools. Now it's about doing it when the lights come on."
