Major League Baseball has put forward a proposal that would cut the regular season to 154 games and add more teams to the postseason. The plan, reportedly discussed in recent bargaining talks, signals another push to reshape the sport's calendar and competitive structure.
Under the idea, the season would lose eight games from its current 162 game format. Supporters argue a shorter schedule could reduce player wear and tear, create more meaningful late season races, and avoid the cold weather conditions that have affected the World Series in recent years. A revised playoff field would also open the door for additional clubs to compete for a championship, which could generate more revenue and keep more fan bases engaged into October.
The proposal is not final. It would need agreement from the players association, and past negotiations have shown that changes to the schedule and playoffs often come with tense debate over money, rest, and competitive balance. Some traditionalists worry that expanding the postseason could dilute the value of a long regular season.
Commissioner Rob Manfred has repeatedly shown a willingness to test new ideas, from pitch clocks to rule tweaks. Whether he gets his way this time will depend on how much both sides are willing to trade. For now, the plan is a starting point, not a done deal.
