NFL Trade Idea Sends Steelers' Alex Highsmith to Packers

A new trade scenario floating around the NFL rumor mill suggests the Green Bay Packers could make a major move to bolster their defensive front by acquiring Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith. The proposal, which has gained traction among analysts, would send the 27-year-old pass rusher to Green Bay in exchange for draft capital, potentially reshaping both teams' defensive identities.

Highsmith has been a consistent force for the Steelers since being drafted in the third round in 2020. He recorded a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2023 and has proven he can thrive as both a primary pass rusher and a run defender. However, with T.J. Watt anchoring the opposite edge and the emergence of younger depth in Pittsburgh, some believe the Steelers might be willing to part with Highsmith for the right price.

For the Packers, the logic is clear. Green Bay's pass rush has been inconsistent, and pairing Highsmith with Rashan Gary could create one of the most disruptive duos in the NFC. Highsmith's motor and ability to win with both speed and power would fit well in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley's aggressive scheme. The Packers have cap flexibility and a need for proven production off the edge, making this a logical fit on paper.

Of course, any deal would require significant compensation. The Steelers would likely demand at least a second-round pick, if not more, for a player of Highsmith's caliber still on a team-friendly contract. Pittsburgh has shown a willingness to move veteran pieces for future assets, but moving a core defender mid-contract would be a bold pivot.

For now, this remains speculation. But as the trade deadline approaches, the Highsmith-to-Green Bay chatter is worth watching. Both teams have reasons to pick up the phone.
