Protect College Sports Act of 2026 draws criticism from UT System, other organizations

The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation approved the Protect College Sports Act of 2026 on June 18. As the act now awaits a full Senate vote, a growing number of universities and athletic conferences have come out in open opposition to the legislation.

The bill aims to establish a national framework for college athletics, focusing specifically on how student-athletes can profit from their Name, Image and Likeness, or NIL. Supporters argue that a uniform federal standard is needed to replace the patchwork of state laws currently governing NIL deals. However, critics within the University of Texas System and other organizations say the act overreaches and threatens the autonomy of individual schools and conferences.

Opponents claim the legislation would impose rigid federal mandates on how athletic departments operate, potentially limiting the flexibility schools need to compete for talent. The UT System has publicly stated that the bill could undermine existing state-level NIL laws that have already proven effective. Several other major conferences have echoed these concerns, warning that a one-size-fits-all approach may not account for regional differences in recruiting and sponsorship markets.

As the debate moves to the Senate floor, the future of college athletics compensation remains uncertain. Lawmakers are expected to face intense lobbying from both sides before any final vote is scheduled.
