KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Ralph Scott is still getting his feet wet with Tennessee basketball, but the freshman wing already has a clear picture of what the coaching staff wants from him. It is not about scoring points or running highlight-reel plays. It is about the dirty work.
Scott described his early role as one focused on defense and energy. He said the coaches have asked him to guard the ball at a high level, stay in front of his man, and bring a relentless motor on every possession. For a young player adjusting to the speed of college basketball, that is a tall order.
"Hard defense is the main thing," Scott said. "They want me to bring energy, to be a pest on the ball, and to make things tough for whoever I am guarding. That is what I am here to do right now."
The wing acknowledged that the transition from high school has been a challenge. The game is faster, the players are stronger, and the margin for error is much smaller. But Scott said he is embracing the role. He knows that earning minutes on a deep Tennessee roster means proving he can be trusted on the defensive end.
Offensively, Scott is still learning the system and finding his spots. But he is not pressing. He understands that his path to playing time runs through his effort on defense and his willingness to do the little things. For now, that means guarding the ball, staying active, and bringing the kind of energy that coaches notice.
