The Tampa Bay Rays took down the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on a cool, breezy evening at T-Mobile Park, putting an end to Seattle's four-game winning streak. It wasn't a game full of fireworks, but for fans who appreciate sharp defense and timely hitting, it had plenty of drama.
The Mariners struck first in the second inning when Julio Rodriguez laced a double down the left field line, scoring a runner from first. But the Rays answered right back in the third. A walk, a stolen base, and a perfectly placed single through the right side tied the game at one. Then, with two outs and a runner on second, a soft blooper fell just out of the reach of the diving second baseman, giving Tampa Bay the lead.
Seattle tied it up again in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but the Rays took the lead for good in the seventh. A leadoff double, a groundout to move the runner over, and then a sharp single to center brought home the go-ahead run.
The real story was the bullpens. Both starters left after six solid innings, but the relievers took over from there. Tampa Bay's bullpen was nearly untouchable, striking out six over the final three frames. The Mariners had a chance in the ninth, putting the tying run on second with one out, but a hard line drive was snagged by the third baseman, who then doubled off the runner at first to end the game.
For Seattle, it was a frustrating loss, especially after their recent hot stretch. They had plenty of chances, leaving eight runners on base. For Tampa Bay, it was a much-needed win, showing they can grind out a close game on the road.
