A new mock draft projection has the Houston Rockets targeting a defensive specialist with their second-round pick. Jonathan Wasserman's recent simulation connects the Rockets to Kentucky center Ugonna Onyenso at No. 39 overall.
Onyenso, a 6-foot-11 sophomore, built a reputation as a rim protector during his time with the Wildcats. He averaged 2.8 blocks per game in limited minutes last season, showcasing the kind of timing and length that translates well to the NBA level. His offensive game remains raw, but his ability to alter shots around the basket makes him an intriguing project for a team looking to add depth behind its current frontcourt.
The Rockets already have young big men like Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr., but adding a pure shot-blocker could provide a different dynamic off the bench. Houston ranked near the middle of the league in blocks last season, and Onyenso's presence would give them a dedicated rim deterrent.
Scouts note that Onyenso needs to develop offensively and add strength, but his defensive instincts are considered NBA-ready. For a team like the Rockets, which is still in the early stages of building a competitive roster, taking a swing on a specialist with a late second-round pick carries low risk and potential upside. If Onyenso can refine his game, he could carve out a role as a reliable backup center.
