Saints sign UDFA DE Michael Heldman

Saints sign UDFA DE Michael Heldman

The New Orleans Saints have bolstered their defensive line by signing undrafted free agent Michael Heldman, a productive pass rusher out of Central Michigan University. Heldman, who went unselected during the 2024 NFL Draft, will now have the opportunity to compete for a roster spot in training camp.

During his collegiate career with the Chippewas, Heldman established himself as a disruptive force off the edge. Over his final two seasons, he accumulated double-digit sacks and consistently pressured opposing quarterbacks, showcasing a relentless motor and a variety of pass-rushing moves. His ability to bend around tackles and his high-effort style caught the attention of Saints scouts, who value versatility and tenacity in their defensive front.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 250 pounds, Heldman projects as a potential rotational edge rusher or special teams contributor. The Saints have a history of developing undrafted talent, and Heldman will look to follow in that tradition. He faces a competitive room that includes established starters and younger prospects, but his college production and work ethic give him a legitimate shot to earn a role.

New Orleans’ defensive scheme under coordinator Joe Woods often rotates its defensive linemen to maintain fresh legs, which could provide Heldman with snaps if he impresses during preseason evaluations. For now, the Central Michigan product will focus on learning the playbook and proving he belongs at the professional level.
