Sean Mannion talks Eagles backup quarterback battle and more

The Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion met with the media on Tuesday and offered a detailed look at the team's ongoing position battles, with the backup quarterback spot taking center stage. Mannion, who took over the play-calling duties this offseason, was candid about the competition between Tanner McKee and Kenny Pickett, noting that the two signal-callers have split first-team reps evenly throughout training camp.

"The reality is both guys have shown flashes, but neither has separated themselves yet," Mannion said. "Tanner has that calm presence in the pocket and he's processing things faster than he did a year ago. Kenny brings that athleticism and the ability to extend plays when the structure breaks down. It's a good problem to have, but we need someone to take that next step in the preseason games."

Mannion also addressed the run game, which ranked near the bottom of the league last season. He credited the new zone-blocking scheme installed by offensive line coach Chris Kuper for the noticeable improvement in practice. Kuper, who joined the staff after a long stint in Denver, has emphasized pad level and lateral movement over pure power.

"The guys are buying into what Chris is teaching," Mannion said. "The communication up front has been night and day compared to last spring. We are seeing more double teams at the second level, and the backs are hitting the right holes without hesitation. It is still a work in progress, but the foundation is there."

When asked about the development of the young tackles, Mannion praised the work of both Jordan Mailata and the rookie from Alabama, noting that Kuper's detailed coaching style has accelerated their growth. He stressed that the offensive line will be the key to everything the team wants to accomplish this fall.
