Value of Things: A look at the hot seat

The Houston Texans have spent the last few years trying to rebuild a roster that felt hollow after the Deshaun Watson era. General manager Nick Caserio has been the architect of that rebuild, and for the most part, the results have been promising. C.J. Stroud looks like a franchise quarterback. The defense has playmakers. But there is one glaring problem that refuses to go away: the offensive line.

If that unit collapses again this season, the question becomes whether Caserio's job is actually safe. The offensive line has been a weak spot for years, and despite multiple drafts and free agent signings, the protection has been inconsistent at best. Stroud took too many hits as a rookie, and while he played through it, the long-term risk is obvious. A franchise quarterback cannot develop if he is constantly running for his life.

Caserio has made moves. He brought in veteran linemen. He spent draft capital on tackles and guards. But the results have not matched the investment. If the line fails again in 2024, it will not just be a football problem. It will be a front office failure. The roster is too talented now to blame a lack of talent. At some point, the general manager has to be held accountable for a unit that has been neglected or misjudged for too long.

The hot seat talk is not just media noise. It is a real possibility if Stroud ends up on his back too often. Caserio has done a lot of good work in Houston, but the offensive line remains the unfinished business that could undo it all.
