The NBA Draft is where franchises, like the Denver Nuggets, are built. Few organizations have found greater value in the later stages of the draft than Denver. The team famously selected three-time MVP Nikola Jokic with the 41st pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Now, the choice is regarded as the greatest second-round pick in league history. Jokic transformed from a little-known prospect into the engine of a championship team, redefining what is possible for late-round selections.
But Jokic is not the only gem the Nuggets have unearthed. Carmelo Anthony, taken third overall in 2003, immediately revived the franchise and led them to the playoffs every season he was there. Dikembe Mutombo, picked fourth in 1991, became a defensive icon and a fan favorite with his finger-wagging blocks. Alex English, a steal in the second round of the 1976 draft, went on to become the franchise's all-time leading scorer. More recently, Jamal Murray (seventh overall in 2016) and Michael Porter Jr. (14th overall in 2018) have proven to be crucial building blocks. Denver's history shows that smart scouting, not just high lottery picks, is the real key to long-term success.
