Fitzgerald Has Had Michigan Marked on the Calendar From the Start

Pat Fitzgerald did not need a calendar reminder. The Michigan game has been circled since the day he took over the program, and this week he made that clear when he talked about what the rivalry means inside the building.

Fitzgerald described Michigan week as one of the defining stretches of the season, a time when preparation, focus, and intensity all get pushed to a higher level. He said the players understand the stakes without anyone having to spell them out, and that the staff has been building toward this matchup since the offseason.

He also spoke about what he wants back in the building: energy, urgency, and a roster that plays with an edge. According to Fitzgerald, the week is not about talk or hype. It is about stacking good practices and making sure the details are right by kickoff.

The message landed with the team. Players said the head coach's tone set the standard for the week, and that the emphasis on discipline and physical play has been consistent since training camp.

Fitzgerald has never treated Michigan as just another opponent, and his program has adopted the same mindset. For him, the game has been marked from day one, and this week is about making sure the preparation matches that expectation.
