You name it, Vince McMillan has probably seen it on an athletic field. With 22 years of experience as a high school official in West Virginia, McMillan has officiated both football and softball games. His extensive background includes serving as a past President and current board member of the Mid-Ohio Valley Umpire’s Association.
In recent years, McMillan has observed a troubling trend: a significant shortage of umpires and officials across various sports. This decline not only affects the quality of games but also poses a challenge for schools and athletic programs that rely on qualified officials to maintain fair play.
The reasons behind this shortage are multifaceted, including increasing pressures on officials, the rising number of confrontations with spectators, and the overall demands of the job. Many potential officials are deterred from entering the field due to these challenges, leading to a critical need for recruitment and retention strategies within the officiating community. As the sports season progresses, the urgency to address this issue becomes more pronounced, highlighting the importance of supporting those who dedicate their time to officiating.
