Yankees Mailbag: Examining the pending free agents

The calendar has turned to August, and for the Yankees, that means the front office is starting to think about the winter. While the focus remains on the playoff push, there is a quiet list of players playing for their next deal. The question is not just whether they help the team down the stretch, but whether the organization sees them as part of the future beyond 2025.

Start with the most obvious name: the veteran starter who has been a steady presence in the rotation. He has not been dominant, but he has been reliable, eating innings and giving the team a chance to win most nights. The Yankees have young arms knocking on the door, though, and the price tag for a mid-rotation guy on the open market is steep. The front office might prefer to let a rookie take those innings next year and spend the money elsewhere. The odds of a reunion feel like a coin flip, leaning slightly toward no unless he finishes the season with a sub-3.50 ERA.

Then there is the left-handed bat who splits time between first base and designated hitter. He has shown power in spurts but has also gone cold for weeks at a time. The analytics department likely sees his hard-hit rate as promising, but the eye test says he is too streaky for a team that needs consistency in the middle of the order. If he goes on a tear in September, maybe the Yankees offer a one-year pillow contract. Otherwise, they let him walk and try to find a more reliable option in free agency.

The bullpen is where things get interesting. Two relievers are set to hit the market, and both have been used in high-leverage spots. One has electric stuff but walks too many batters. The other is a ground-ball machine who rarely gives up the long ball. The Yankees have a history of overpaying for relief help, but they also have a wave of hard-throwing prospects in the minors. The likely outcome is that they keep one and let the other go, depending on who shows better command over the next six weeks.

The biggest wildcard is the shortstop. He came over in a trade and has played solid defense but has struggled to hit for average. The Yankees have a top prospect at that position who is almost ready. That makes it hard to justify a multi-year deal for a glove-first guy who might not even be an upgrade next season. Unless he suddenly finds his stroke and posts a .280 average with 15 homers from here on out, the answer is probably a polite thank you and good luck.

In the end, the Yankees will likely bring back maybe two of the five pending free agents. The rest will be replaced by cheaper, younger options or bigger names on the market. The next month is not just about winning games. It is about auditions.
