The Pittsburgh Steelers walked into their matchup with the New England Patriots expecting to establish rhythm on offense. Instead, they left with more questions than answers, and head coach Mike McCarthy was the first to point the finger at himself.
McCarthy, who also handles play calling duties, did not mince words when assessing his performance. He told reporters that the unit's lack of production falls squarely on his shoulders, citing poor sequencing, missed opportunities in the red zone, and an inability to adjust when New England shifted its coverage looks.
The numbers painted a grim picture. Pittsburgh managed just one touchdown across four quarters and repeatedly stalled on third down. Drives that showed promise early fizzled before reaching scoring range. McCarthy acknowledged that his decisions put players in difficult spots rather than helping them succeed.
Players echoed a similar tone, saying the game plan had merit but execution and timing never aligned. Several veterans noted that the offense is still learning a new system, though nobody used that as an excuse.
McCarthy made clear that fixing the issues starts with him. He plans to review the film, simplify certain concepts, and get back to fundamentals before the next matchup. For a team with playoff hopes, the margin for error is shrinking, and the head coach knows the pressure is on him to turn things around quickly.
