The NHL's Obsession With No-Trade Clauses: Why Hockey Is The Outlier In North American Sports

No-trade and no-move clauses have become so common in the NHL that many fans assume they are simply part of the business of sports. They are not. In fact, hockey stands alone among the four major North American leagues when it comes to the sheer volume and impact of these contract restrictions.

In the NFL, NBA, and MLB, such clauses are rare and typically reserved for only the biggest superstars. The NBA has a no-trade clause rule that applies only to players with eight years of service and four years with their current team. In the NFL, full no-trade clauses are almost unheard of. In the NHL, however, roughly one in every four players under contract has some form of trade protection. For top players, that number climbs closer to one in two.

The reason is rooted in the league's collective bargaining agreement, which allows teams to offer these clauses as a way to lower a player's cap hit or secure a discount on the total salary. In exchange for giving up some money, the player gets control over where they play. This has created a system where general managers routinely hand out no-move clauses to second-line forwards and middle-pairing defensemen.

The result is a frozen trade market. When a team wants to rebuild, they often find themselves stuck with aging players who cannot be moved. The clauses also create a two-tier system where stars hold all the power, while younger players without any protection are shipped out at a moment's notice. As the league moves toward a hard salary cap that keeps climbing, the obsession with these clauses shows no sign of slowing down.
