CASPER, Wyo. - A longtime fixture of Casper's airwaves has gone silent. Frank Gambino, known for his decades of sports reporting and commentary on local radio, died this week at the age of 74, according to family members.
Gambino spent more than 40 years covering high school and college athletics across central Wyoming. He called play by play for countless football and basketball games, earning a reputation for meticulous preparation and an encyclopedic memory of players, coaches, and stats.
Before moving to Casper, Gambino worked at stations in Nebraska and Colorado. He arrived in Wyoming in the late 1970s and quickly became a trusted voice for listeners who relied on him for scores, standings, and analysis. Coaches often said he knew their teams as well as they did.
Off the air, Gambino mentored young broadcasters and volunteered with local sports booster clubs. He was inducted into the Wyoming Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 for his contributions to athletics coverage.
A private memorial service is planned for next week. Donations in his memory may be made to a local youth sports organization.
