Oklahoma's head coach Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle addressed the media this week about the team's approach to scoring, specifically the role field goals play in the broader offensive philosophy. The conversation came after a game in which the Sooners leaned on their kicking game more than expected, prompting questions about red zone efficiency and decision-making.
Venables was direct when asked about settling for three points instead of seven. He said the staff evaluates every drive on its own merits and that taking points when they are available is not a sign of conservatism. According to Venables, the worst outcome is walking away with nothing after moving the ball into scoring range. He stressed that trust in the kicker has grown and that the operation, from snap to hold to kick, has been consistent in practice.
Arbuckle echoed that sentiment but added nuance. He noted that the offense must do a better job of finishing drives, particularly when they cross the opponent's 30 yard line. He pointed to a handful of plays where protection broke down or a route was cut short, turning potential touchdowns into long field goal attempts. Arbuckle said those details are correctable and that the staff is emphasizing situational work in practice this week.
Both coaches made clear that field goals are not the goal, but they are a reliable fallback. Venables said a kicker who can convert from distance changes how a defense has to play, and Arbuckle agreed, adding that the threat of points from anywhere on the field keeps opposing coordinators honest. The Sooners will look to convert more of those opportunities into touchdowns in the coming weeks.
